Islamabad: Minister of State for Interior Senator Talal Chaudhry has expressed serious reservations over the proposed Police Act by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, saying that the provinces cannot form their own army and police.
While holding a press conference in Islamabad, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said that the act has just been approved by the cabinet, the provincial government should be careful, the federation has many options on the amended Police Act, this Police Act will be challenged in the Supreme Court.
He said that the KP government has not only taken back the powers of the IG but has destroyed the entire command, political interference is clearly visible in the proposed Police Act, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi tried to keep the authority in his pocket and subordinate it to his political party.
He further said that according to the constitution and law, no change can be made in the rules of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), the command structure of the police, which fights terrorism and sacrifices its lives, cannot be destroyed.
It should be noted that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet had approved the draft of the Police Act 2026 yesterday, which includes proposals to appoint a provincial police chief and increase the powers of the provincial government in the policy, administrative, operational and financial matters of the police.
Under the proposed law, the federal government will send a panel of three officers to the provincial government for the appointment of the Inspector General of Police (IG). The provincial government will have the power to select any officer from this panel or reject the entire panel.
Talal Chaudhry criticized the proposed act in a press conference and said that such legislation is a violation of the constitution and PSP rules. According to him, you have not taken back the powers of the IG but have destroyed the entire command structure.
He said that the Chief Minister has reserved the authority to appoint from DSP to IG. He asked whether the police will fight terrorism like this? Will the police now look to political representatives instead of its officers?
According to Talal Chaudhry, all Chief Ministers already have the authority to consult and direct regarding appointments in the police.
