Islamabad: The federal government has announced that it will hold a debate on the creation of new provinces in the National Assembly and the Senate in October.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate would not be held in September due to many legislative issues already in progress.

Mr Chaudhry stated that this debate is taking place among all kinds of people across the country- intellectuals and the business sector are discussing it- but that originally Parliament is the proper platform for the discussion regarding new provinces.

He clarified that Islamabad would not become a province but would instead adopt a new model of governance; the possibility of Islamabad becoming an independent province is not being considered.
