In China, a company threatened employees that they would be fired if they did not get married.
According to a foreign news agency report, a company located in China’s Shandong province caught the attention of government officials when they threatened to fire single and divorced employees if they remained single by the end of September.
According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Shandong Chemical Group Co., Ltd. issued a notice to its 1,200 employees, urging them to work well and start a family. The notice states that single employees aged 28 to 58, including divorced people, must get married by the end of September this year. Those who have not been able to get married by June will be reviewed by the company and fired if they remain single by the end of September.
As soon as the news went viral, Chinese social media users criticized the decision, saying that the company was violating several laws. One user commented that corporate rules should not override laws or social morality, while another pointed out that Chinese marriage law guarantees freedom of marriage.
A third user wrote that the company should stay out of the personal lives of employees.
