The Trump administration is offering $1,000 in travel assistance to immigrants who voluntarily deport themselves from the United States. According to the Department of Homeland Security, this initiative aims to reduce costs associated with deportation, which average around $17,000 per individual. By choosing voluntary departure, immigrants can avoid arrest and the associated costs.

The program allows immigrants to notify the government through the “CBP Home” app of their intention to return to their country. Once notified, they will be removed from the deportation list. Homeland Security Secretary emphasizes that self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to avoid arrest.

The Trump administration has deported 152,000 people since January 20, a number that is lower compared to the 195,000 deported during a similar period under the previous administration. The initiative reflects the administration’s efforts to manage immigration and reduce costs associated with deportation proceedings
