The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) bogus degrees scandal refers to a high-profile controversy in Pakistan that came to light in 2018. It involved the revelation that numerous pilots employed by PIA, the National Flag carrier, held fake or bogus degrees. This shocking discovery sparked widespread outrage and raised serious concerns about aviation safety and the integrity of Pakistan’s educational and regulatory systems.
In a case filed by the FIA in a local court in Lahore, two pilots, an air hostess and a computer operator of the National Airline, Pakistan International, were convicted. The anti-corruption circle of Lahore FIA had registered a case after investigating the recruitment of fake degrees in the national airline two years ago. According to the suit, airline pilot Kashan Ejaz Dodhi joined the national airline in 1995 and was dismissed in 2019 and pilot Mohsin Ali joined in 2006 and was dismissed in 2014. Both pilots submitted fake graduation degrees to the institute. Air hostess Nazia Naheed joined the airline on a five-year contract in 2001 and later submitted a graduation degree to be permanent, which turned out to be fake, after which she was fired in 2014.
