The International Union of Journalists (IUJ), a global platform representing journalists from across continents, has announced the results of its Executive Council elections for the 2025–2027 term. The elections, held on October 5, were conducted under the IUJ Constitution, ensuring transparency, fairness, and broad international participation.
According to the official announcement by the IUJ Election Commission, Carlos Felipe Villa Prado from Chile has been elected as the new President of the organization. Rosan Puri from Nepal will serve as Vice President 1, alongside other vice presidents Héctor Parra Gonzalez (Mexico), Nelson Del Castillo (Puerto Rico), and Dulashi Darmasena (Sri Lanka), who represents women journalists.
From Pakistan, Z. A. Muhammad has been elected as the General Secretary, while Sudewa Hettiarachchi (Sri Lanka) and Martin Kalos (Czech Republic) were chosen as Assistant General Secretaries. Denisa Petrilaková (Czech Republic) has been elected as Treasurer, and Marek Traczyk (Poland) will serve as Chairman of the Executive Committee.
The newly elected Executive Committee includes Dipendra Kunwar (Nepal), Jaime Villarroel (Chile), René Vega Giles (Mexico), Roman Blasco (Czech Republic), Adeel Shahid (Pakistan), and Sabin Dhamala (Nepal).
In a significant development, M. M. Younis has been appointed as the Chief Coordinator and Spokesperson of the IUJ.
In a statement issued after the elections, the IUJ leadership expressed appreciation to all member journalists, national associations, and observers for their participation and commitment to democratic principles and press freedom. The new council pledged to “strengthen international solidarity among journalists, defend freedom of expression, and promote ethical journalism globally.”
The IUJ serves as an umbrella organization uniting journalist unions, associations, and media professionals worldwide to safeguard the rights of journalists and uphold professional standards.
