Rawalpindi – Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has warmly welcomed the recently announced defense pact between Pakistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, describing it as a “matter of pride and honor” for every Pakistani. In a message issued from prison on September 22, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder stressed that discussions for such an agreement had also been underway during his government’s tenure, and he was pleased to see those efforts materializing into a formal arrangement.

Imran Khan underlined the spiritual and emotional attachment of Pakistanis to the Haramain Sharifain, the two holiest sites in Islam, and declared that ensuring their security was a responsibility every Muslim carried in their heart. “Every Muslim desires that the security of the Haramain Sharifain is guaranteed, and it is a matter of pride and honor for every Pakistani to have this privilege,” he stated. His remarks reflect a broader sentiment in Pakistan, where safeguarding the sanctity of Makkah and Madinah is seen as a duty of faith as well as a cornerstone of the country’s relationship with Saudi Arabia.

The defense pact between Islamabad and Riyadh has been hailed as a significant milestone, cementing decades of strategic, military, and economic cooperation between the two nations. While details of the agreement have not been fully disclosed, officials describe it as a framework to deepen defense collaboration, enhance joint training, and strengthen regional security. Analysts believe the pact comes at a time of shifting alliances in the Middle East and South Asia, underscoring the importance of Pakistan as a trusted partner for Saudi Arabia in maintaining stability and ensuring the protection of Islamic holy sites.

Imran Khan’s endorsement of the pact is also notable given the political divides within Pakistan. By acknowledging that preliminary talks on such an arrangement were pursued under his administration, Khan sought to highlight continuity in policy across governments on matters tied to national pride and religious responsibility. His message from prison underscores the unifying nature of Pakistan’s ties with Saudi Arabia, which have historically transcended political rivalries.

The development further strengthens a long-standing bond rooted not only in defense cooperation but also in shared faith, cultural ties, and economic interdependence. Pakistan has traditionally provided military training and advisory support to Saudi Arabia, while Riyadh has extended vital economic assistance to Islamabad during times of financial strain. The new defense pact is being viewed as an evolution of this partnership, aligning both countries more closely in a period of heightened regional uncertainty.

By extending his support from behind bars, Imran Khan has reinforced a rare consensus within Pakistan’s political spectrum, that the protection of the Haramain Sharifain is above politics, and that Pakistan’s role in this regard remains a source of national pride. His statement adds weight to the symbolic and strategic importance of the defense pact, positioning it not just as a bilateral agreement but as an expression of the Muslim world’s collective responsibility toward its holiest sites.
