The Islamabad administration has issued demolition notices to several mosques and imambargahs for being built on green belts and protected lands. The administrators of the affected mosques and imambargahs have called a meeting on August 13 at Farooq-e-Azam Mosque (I-9) to formulate a joint strategy and decide to file a joint petition in the court.
The administrators of some mosques have already applied to the sessions and civil courts and obtained stay orders. The preachers claim that these places of worship were constructed in accordance with all legal procedures, including NOC, CDA clearance, and Auqaf approval, and some were even built by government departments themselves.
The notices allege that these structures violate the Islamabad Preservation of Landscape Ordinance 1966, which is a punishable offense, and have said that the structures must be removed immediately or strict action will be taken.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon was contacted but did not respond.
This full story confirms that the government is planning to demolish mosques on green belts in Islamabad, but there is also legal and public resistance to this.
