Scientists have revealed in a new study that the sewerage system of the US state of Florida has become home to an abundance of reptiles and other animals that use drain pipes for movement. As urban sprawl continues, wildlife around the world is being forced to use human environments for their natural needs.
The study, published in the journal ‘Urban Naturalist’, describes how wild animals use the Florida sewer system. The researchers used cameras to find out how wild species use the route, especially in the state’s Alachua County.
Scientists discovered a total of 35 species of animals in the city’s sewer system that use it to navigate. These included aquatic animals, reptiles, and birds. Alligators were also found in the sewer system, which can be dangerous to citizens.
