US President Donald Trump said in a post on his Twitter account, “I just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia about stopping the war with Thailand, and I am now calling the acting Prime Minister of Thailand to similarly demand a ceasefire and an end to this ongoing war.”
He said, “Incidentally, we are currently discussing trade issues with both countries, but our position is clear that if they are fighting each other, we will not make any deals with any country, and I have made that clear to them.”
President Trump said, “The phone call with Thailand is being made in a few moments, the talks with Cambodia have been completed, but as soon as the position from Thailand comes out, we will contact them again to discuss a ceasefire and stop the fighting.”
He said, “I am trying to simplify a complex situation, many people are being killed in this war, and this situation reminds me of the conflict between Pakistan and India, which was finally successfully resolved.”
Later, President Trump, informing about the progress in a post, said, “I have just spoken to the acting Prime Minister of Thailand, and the conversation was very positive. Thailand, like Cambodia, wants an immediate ceasefire and peace. Now I am going to convey this message back to the Prime Minister of Cambodia.”

He said, “After talking to the parties, it seems that a ceasefire, peace and prosperity are becoming a natural path. Everything will be clear soon.”
The US President said in another post that ‘I just had a very good phone call with the Prime Minister of Cambodia, and informed him of my discussions with Thailand and its acting Prime Minister. Both sides want an immediate ceasefire and peace. They also want to resume trade talks with the United States, but our position is that this move would not be appropriate until the fighting stops.’
President Trump said that ‘they have agreed to an immediate meeting and an early ceasefire and have also agreed to move towards complete peace. It has been an honor to deal with both countries. Their history and culture are very ancient and wonderful. I hope they will have good relations with each other in the years to come.’
The US President said, ‘When everything is over, and peace is established, I will be happy to complete trade agreements with both countries.’
What is the reason for the conflict?
It should be noted that the main reason for the dispute between Thailand and Cambodia is the border boundary and the Phraya Wihyar Temple, which is an ancient Hindu temple and is located near the border of the two countries. This temple is located in Cambodian territory, but Thailand claims the land around it.
In 1962, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that the temple is part of Cambodia, but the two countries continued to dispute the ownership of some of the land around the temple.
Another important reason for the border dispute is that the maps and agreements drawn up after the French colonial period could not fully define the borders, as a result, both countries claim their borders based on different maps.
Between 2008 and 2011, there were several clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces around the Phraya Wihayar temple, which resulted in casualties. Both countries have accused each other of starting the fire, sometimes inciting the conflict to divert attention from internal political issues, which has increased tensions.
In 2011, Cambodia once again approached the International Court of Justice to clarify whether the 1962 decision included only the temple or the surrounding land. The court later ruled that the area around the temple was also part of Cambodia, but Thailand did not fully recognize this decision.
The dispute did not escalate into a full-scale war, but it has seen periodic tensions, diplomatic crises, and military tensions. The recent tensions between the two countries began after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a border clash on May 28, 2025.
On July 23, a Thai soldier was injured and lost his leg in a landmine explosion, after which the two countries began hostilities. Cambodia used BM-21 rocket launchers while Thailand carried out airstrikes with F-16 aircraft. As a result of the fighting, more than 35 soldiers and civilians on both sides have been killed and dozens injured.
