According to a report by “India Today,” the Modi government has planned to connect the Indus River with the Ravi and Beas rivers, diverting water to the Harike Barrage in Punjab via the Sutlej River. This development comes after India allegedly suspended the Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
The plan involves constructing a 200-kilometer-long mega canal and 12 major tunnels to redirect the water flow. The water will then flow into various canals, including the Indira Gandhi Canal and the Ganga Canal, ultimately falling into the Yamuna River.
Engineer Arshad H. Abbasi, an expert on water, energy, and environmental issues, had previously warned about India’s plans to divert the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers. He stated that the Modi government has now officially revealed its plan to block Pakistan’s river water.
Abbasi has developed AI-based systems to track land use changes in the watersheds of the Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers in Indian-occupied Kashmir, providing real-time information. This development has raised concerns about the potential impact on Pakistan’s water resources.
