Rawalpindi – The federal government has decided to extend the tenure of Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI) Lieutenant General Asim Malik, while the Prime Minister has directed him to continue his services in the position.
According to security sources, the government has approved the extension of Lt Gen Asim Malik’s term, under which he will continue as DG ISI. The Prime Minister has also instructed him to carry on his responsibilities.
In addition to his role as DG ISI, Lt Gen Asim Malik also serves as the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the Prime Minister, a position he will continue to hold.
Security officials confirmed that Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik, head of Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), will remain in his current position. He was appointed DG ISI in September 2024, replacing Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum.
In April 2025, the government assigned him the additional charge of National Security Adviser (NSA) to strengthen coordination and ensure effective implementation of national security policymaking.
Lt Gen Asim Malik is regarded as a highly competent and professional officer of the Pakistan Army, having previously commanded an infantry division in Balochistan and an infantry brigade in South Waziristan — regions that have remained at the core of Pakistan’s security challenges for the past two decades.
A Sword of Honour recipient from the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), Lt Gen Malik earned the institution’s highest accolade awarded to the best cadet of each course.
He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) in the United Kingdom.
Lt Gen Malik has also served as Chief Instructor at the National Defence University (NDU) and as an Instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta.
He is the son of Lt Gen (R) Ghulam Muhammad Malik, a distinguished officer who held senior command positions in the Pakistan Army during the 1990s.
