While the fleet of every government institution in Pakistan is sunk, there are some facts that have come out from the prisons of Lahore, which have shaken the hearts of the people. In our society, where we see the middle class being degraded, the common people do not know anything about the condition of the prisoners in the jail. But after the report of the Superintendent Jail, Lahore, heartbreaking facts have come out that at least 42 prisoners have lost their lives in just one year.
According to the report of the superintendent jail Lahore:
District Jail Lahore:
6675 prisoners are confined in prison against an authorized accumulation of 2000 prisoners. 42 number of prisoners died between 01.01.2024 to 05.09.2024. Â upon the death of any prisoner, the Superintendent jail requested the learned District and session Judge, Lahore to depute a judicial magistrate to hold a judicial inquest into the death of the prisoner in light of section 174 of the Cr.P.C and Rule 735 of the Pakistan Prisoners Rules 1978 for further lawful orders and the disposal of the dead body. After conducting the judicial inquest the learned judicial magistrate ordered the concerned investigating officer to take custody of the dead or the purpose of any autopsy to ascertain the actual cause of death in accordance with law.
In 42 cases of death accord in the District jail, Lahore, District, and session judge deputed magistrate section-30 to do an investigation to find out the cause of death.
According to the findings of Inquest reports of 31 death cases, the cause of death was declared as natural and one prisoner committed suicide. However, the Inquest report of the remaining 10 death cases is still pending with the learned Magistrate.
Central Jail Lahore:
At present 3810 prisoners are confined in jail against the authorized accumulation of 2360 prisoners. As per a report of the Superintendent Central jail, 26 prisoners had been died between 01.01.2024 to 21.09.2024.
In 26 cases of death accord at Central jail, Lahore, District, and Session Judge deputed Magistrate section-30 to investigate the cause of death. According to the findings of the Inquest report of remaining 08 number of death cases is still pending while 18 deaths were declared as natural.
Two complaints of allegations of custodial torture leveled against the jail administration of the central jail, Lahore referred to FIA for investigation by the orders of the Lahore High Court, in writ petition No.45780/2024 titled Muhammad Muhtar Khan vs. Inspector General of Prison Punjab and other relevant offices and officers.
The nation is still waiting for the result of that inquiry.
