Islamabad: After detailed debate in the National Assembly regarding cybercrime, all cases were handed over to the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). Under this decision, powers relating to cybercrime were withdrawn from police departments across the country so that these matters could be handled through a single department.
According to sources, despite this policy, Islamabad Police are still receiving cybercrime complaints from citizens and are even formally contacting victims via phone calls. Surprisingly, in many cases, this responsibility has been assigned to lower-ranking personnel, even constables, who summon the affected parties.
Citizens say this practice is questionable, since once all cases have been placed under NCCIA’s jurisdiction, the legal standing of police involvement remains unclear. According to them, if a department no longer holds authority, then accepting complaints or summoning victims for investigation may fall under the category of “unauthorized interference.”
