WASHINGTON: A 29-year-old Afghan national has been identified as the suspect involved in a shooting incident near the White House, US officials confirmed on Tuesday.

According to authorities, the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, arrived in the United States in 2021 and had previously lived in the state of Washington. Briefing reporters alongside the FBI director, officials said the attacker acted alone.

The suspect, who was critically injured during the exchange, was shifted to a hospital along with two National Guard personnel who were also wounded in the attack.

President Donald Trump stated that he was in Florida at the time of the incident. The motive behind the shooting has yet to be determined, officials added.
