A German aerospace engineer Rudiger Koch set a world record for the longest time underwater. The German citizen spent 120 days in his 320-square-foot capsule under the sea off the coast of Panama. Four cameras monitored his mental health in the capsule and filmed his daily movements.
Previously, the record for spending the most time underwater was held by American citizen Joseph Dettori, who spent 100 days underwater in a lake in Florida. The German citizen’s capsule contained all the necessary items, including a bed, toilet, TV, computer, internet, and even an exercise bike. The capsule was connected to a chamber above the water so that contact with the outside world could be maintained. A ladder was connected to the upper chamber to bring food and drinks and make a way for visitors to reach the capsule. There were also solar panels and a backup generator on the surface to provide electricity.
Rudiger Koch said that his experiment will change the way we think about human life, we can permanently inhabit water. He said that what we are trying to do here is to prove that the ocean is actually a viable environment for humans to live in.
