LAHORE – Police on Tuesday arrested the suspect involved in the sexual assault of a mentally impaired girl, marking a major development in the case.
The incident was reported on November 14 at the Kot Lakhpat Police Station. According to officials, DIG Operations Faisal Kamran took notice of the case and constituted a special team to trace the culprit.
The Kot Lakhpat police team, led by SP Model Town Sheherbano Naqvi, apprehended the suspect, identified as Munawar Nauman alias Nomi. Police said the suspect had rented a quarter near Boastan Colony, Qainchi Stop, where he would lure the victim and assault her repeatedly.
DIG Kamran said the 23-year-old victim was taken to Lahore General Hospital by the suspect on November 13 when her condition deteriorated. However, he fled after leaving her there. CCTV footage showed the suspect arriving at the hospital with the girl and then escaping.
Initial medical reports confirmed that the victim is pregnant, the DIG added.
Police have handed over the suspect to the Gender Crime Cell for further investigation. DIG Kamran also commended the team involved in the arrest and ordered commendation certificates for ASP Model Town Kashmala Farooq and SHO Kot Lakhpat.
He said crimes against women and children are a “red line” for the Punjab government, adding that those who exploit women deserve no leniency.
