Paris: Clashes have broken out between police and protesters during a protest by thousands of students against the quality of education and the conditions of schools in France, with 1,747 people arrested. More than 700 schools have been affected by student protests in France, while incidents of arson have also occurred on the streets.
Protesters are protesting against the shortage of teachers, overcrowding in classrooms, and dilapidated school buildings.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said that 1,747 people have been arrested, the situation in the country is moving towards riots and civil violence, and all available measures are being taken to end it.
French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said that the protests have now become more than just high school student protests, but a public order issue, with 735 of the country’s 3,700 schools affected in one way or another by these violent protests.
The protests, which began in Paris last week, have now spread to other cities across the country, including Montpellier, Nantes and Marseille. Students say school hours are too long, classrooms are too hot and many staff members are absent from work.
French Education Minister Edouard Geffen has accused non-students of exploiting the student movement for their own ends. The protests come at a time when the government’s proposed budget cuts will also affect education funding, which has angered young protesters.
Parents also fear that their children could be caught up in the violence and unrest during the protests.
