After winning the Women’s Asia Cup final, the Indian women’s team once again allowed politics to overshadow cricket by refusing to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
The prize distribution ceremony for the Women’s T20 Asia Cup final took place in Dubai, with ACC President Mohsin Naqvi present on stage. However, the Indian team remained gathered in a huddle outside the dressing room and did not come onto the field. Consequently, the ceremony concluded without the Indian team; as they did not accept the trophy, the ACC retained it.
ACC sources have clarified that if the winning team wishes to receive the trophy, they must accept it from Mohsin Naqvi. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka women’s team captain Chamari Athapaththu accepted the runners-up award from ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
ACC sources stated that the protocol for the trophy presentation was fully established and the trophy was ready to be handed to the winning Indian team. The Indian team made the decision not to accept the trophy themselves, and the ACC is simply awaiting them to do so. Following this conduct by the Indian team, Mohsin Naqvi retained the trophy, adhering to his long-standing principled stance.
